My name is Lynda Robinson and I am 52 years old and have lived in Wheatley
Hill for the last 6 years.
My husband Barry is a builder and is from Wheatley Hill originally. For
28 years of our marriage we lived in the village of Wingate.
We have 2 children called Kay aged 30 and Michael aged 26 and 2 grand
daughters Megan aged 7 and Eleanor aged 2.
My husband had always wanted to build his own house and in 1993, along
with my daughter and son-in-law, purchased some land on the old colliery
site at Wheatley Hill. Over a year, we proceeded to build 2 houses next
to each other.
We have always had ties with Wheatley Hill, my mother-in-law, Olive was
a Wingate woman who married Charlie, a Wheatley Hill man. My daughter
married a Wheatley Hill man Graham Carter, so it seems to run in the family.
My sister-in-law, Rita has been a long running member of the Mothers Club
and she got me to go at first as a guest and then I joined 5 weeks ago.
I enjoy the events and meetings and (not forgetting) the company.
I have plenty of things I enjoy doing, such as painting and art, going
to the theatre, walking my dog, gardening, decorating and lots of creative
work.
I had a very happy childhood and my fondest memories are of my Dad, who
had a smallholding, with lots of fresh vegetables and animals. He used
to have a horse and cart, and was known as Tom the fish man. He used to
sell all types of fish, twice a week. My sister Joan and I used to spend
hours down our allotment.
On a Sunday night, my Mam and my Aunts would all meet at my Gran's as
what was then known as prog mats. They all sat around large trestles and
made what was known as runners (long hall carpets). Meanwhile we all played
hide and seek and dressed up in Gran's old clothes and jewellery and we
would try to work the gramophone player.
Some Saturday afternoons, we would visit our local cinema known as The
Matinee. We had two to chose from, and we used to watch things like Tiger
Woman, Laurel and Hardy, Mr Pastry, The Tree Stooges and Disney Features.
I could write forever about my childhood and having written what I have,
I hope it gives you an insight about myself and a small part of my life.
