Millennium Celebrations

In the year 2000 we tried to be as inventive as we could by joining any national celebrations. So we formed a choir in March 2000 and in the May we staged a show for the Music Live . We were mentioned on Radio Cleveland and the choir's photo was in the Sunderland Echo. We fund-raised and organised a Millennium Picnic for all of the village. Every school child received a bag of goodies. All of the organisations in the village helped on the day including our Fire Service, Old Scouts, Community Association and our Junior Football team. We hired the G.T. Brass band to make it s wonderful carnival atmosphere We have also visited Rock Farm which is the centre of Wheatley Hill's history. Rock Farm is in our front street and dates back to the 14th century with a very colourful history. Its present owners Clive and Connie Gregory were doing renovations to the farm house and found some really interesting architecture. We were invited to see and had a tour of the dairy farm at the same time. "You don't realise what history is on your own doorstep" But of course we had to visit the 'Dome' just to make our own opinion of it. We were most impressed and found it sad that it had so much bad publicity.

After our success in raising funds for the Play-Park we have gained confidence to raise more for good causes in our village We have helped our Junior and Senior Football teams by buying strips and goalposts. We have help an autistic little lad in our village We raised funds to put hanging baskets outside of the Aged Miners Homes. We have bought two decorative pit helmets to hang in our newly formed Heritage Centre We have also given to many charities both local, national and international. On the other hand when we have asked for help we have received it from, our Parish Council, organisations and business in our village, and charitable trusts and national companies. Our present project is a educational safe play area for very young children in our Community Centre Grounds with picnic facilities for parents and grandparents. We need £32,000 to complete this, we have to date, £15,500. We are sure our target will be met and we will proceed with another idea. We have an excellent club with hard working and inventive members may we go from strength to strength.
