Ryton

The Parish Church of the Holy Cross stands strategically above the Tyne and this looks always to have been an important site. From here the ancient Parish of Ryton spread as far afield as Chopwell, Blaydon and to the boundaries of Northumberland. Ryton's importance as a centre grew from it's role as the centre of the parish.

Ryton stands at the heart of the district with all our other communities ringing the old village.

Whilst the outer villages were industrial centres, Ryton's role was commerce, administration, transport, religion not to mention well-to-do housing.
Because of this, the place has a feel quite different to that of it's neighbours: an old Village, an impressive range of Gentlemans' Houses and a number of well-appointed Terraces built as the railway helped give Newcastle commuters their place in the country.
