Hedgefield and Addison

Hedgefield was the original settlement of this district. The Addison community came and went: the district is "Hedgefield" once more.

Hedgefield was never large. It's buildings are now mostly on the south side of the main road: Hedgefield farm, Hedgefield Hotel (the Stella Coal Company offices), Hedgefield House Hotel (a residence of the Coal owners), Hedgefield Church and few stone cottages. High Hedgefield House (formerly an inn called the "Royal Oak") and High Hedgefield Terrace lie on the north side.

The village of Addison was another purpose-built colliery community that failed to reach it's centenary. Built on the slopes between the railway line and the main road, it was pulled down and landscaped after the mine closed in 1963 .

The village is now mature woodland. A few of the paths running through follow village roads. There are also the occasional remains of colliery structures, in particular the tunnel that took the railway from Stargate, Emma and Greenside pits under the road and down to the main line.
"Addison" now survives as a Male Voice Choir, a railway crossing, a small industrial estate (built on the flat land below the wood), but no longer a village.
