Barmoor (sometimes known as "West Ryton") lies between Ryton Village and Crawcrook. It's western boundary is at the Brow of Emma Bank, it's eastern (approximately) Barmoor Lane.

Originally the "Bare Moor" between Ryton and Crawcrook, it became the site of the Emma colliery (sunk 1845) and the settlements that surrounded it. Curiously the "green belt" by the rugby field was the colliery site, the most industrialised part of the district.

Emmaville was the original colliery settlement lying behind the Simpson Memorial Homes. The housing still follows the line of the old settlement but has been redeveloped as sheltered accomodation.
(Emmaville Hall and School are down the bank in Crawcrook.)
