As with Greenside, Crawcrook was a community that followed the main roads through the village. In common with Greenside, Clara Vale and Stargate it bears the stamp of a turn-of the-century colliery community as reflected in it's chapels, it's terraces and it's shops.

Spreading away from the main roads are the more recent estates such as Garden House, built to re-house from sub-standard miners' cottages at Emmaville and Kepier Chare a large, modern, private development which has greatly altered the overall character of the village.

Before the sinking of the large collieries of the area (Emma and Clara) the Crawcrook area was covered with smaller pits. These were all linked to a major wagonway network many of whose routes survive today as modern footpaths.

The other great features of Crawcrook's landscape are the Landed Estates and sand quarries to the west of the village. At present the quarries seem vast and unsightly but it is to be hoped that in time they will be blended sensitively back into their surroundings.
