South Hetton is a small ex-mining village in Co. Durham, approximately
4 miles north of Peterlee and 1.5 miles west of the A19, it has
a population of about 2,500 people. Like most of the mining villages
of the northeast, South Hetton suffered a great deal with the loss
of the mining industry. The closure of the colliery lead to knock-on
effects in ancillary industries and to the closure of many small
businesses in the area. These closures lead to a high degree of
deprivation in the community as well as a strong sense of being
abandoned and a growing apathy among the population. Population
decreased and the average age of villagers increased as young people
left in search of work and a better environment to live in. South
Hetton Community Partnership was formed to promote the regeneration
of the village into a vibrant, confident, growing village.
The Partnership is a partnership of local interest groups (e.g.
Church, School, Parish Council, Cricket club etc.) and private citizens.
