The Welfare Park has a variety of
sporting activities and clubs, which include, cricket, football, and
bowls. There is a floodlit all weather area, which is used for 5 a-side,
hockey, netball, and basketball, a full sized tennis court, and a
basketball facility. During school holiday periods the Parish Council
provide a free sport activity course for the children on weekdays
from 10-12noon and 1-3pm.
Cricket Club
The club, founded in 1880, last year moved up into the Durham Senior
League, where they finished a very creditable 2nd, won the Northern
Rock Bowl and the Austin Trophy (Champions Cup). The second and third
teams were well placed in their leagues. The 2nd's won the James Bell
Trophy. Junior sides also had a good season, the Under 18's finishing
mid-table, the Under 15 finished 2nd in the league, won 3 cups/trophies,
and were runners up in 2 others, and the Under 13 finished 3rd in
their league.
Football
Currently there are 2 football teams playing in the village. The Cricket
club Football club play in the Sunday league. The South Hetton Under
11 team play in the Sunderland League
Bowls Club
The club have 2 teams, which play in 2 different leagues, The South
East Veterans League for members over 58years of age, and the Rural
League, which has no age restrictions. Members are able to play anytime
the green is open - usually after 1pm daily from April to September.
